Muay Thai Chaiya

Muay Chaiya (Muay relates to the ‘boxing’ aspect and Chaiya relates to the geographical area it originated) is a traditional form of Muay Thai. Thought to originate around 200 years ago, in the age of King Rama V, the king taught Muay Chaiya to common people in the surrounding towns. Muay Chaiya uses both offensive (throwing, smashing, grappling and breaking) and defensive techniques (dodging, pushing and blocking). It also includes a unique move called Yang Sarm Khoom; a 3-step move to quickly change the position of the front and back legs, offering speed and procision to the fighter.

Thanyapura’s instructors will teach guests the proper steps and movements to refine their technique. A lot of practice is needed before moving on to perfect the more advanced techniques of kicking and punching. Muay Chaiya’s fighting style is elegant, placing emphasis on low kicks and focusing on the precision of each move. The fluidity of kicks and counter attacks of punches, blocks, elbow strikes and forearm strikes makes it a beautiful sport to watch – and to take part in.

Before beginning the class, each hand is tightly bound to add impact to each punch, but only to the wrist. The elbows and forearms are kept free to maximise movement. Unlike Muay Thai, students practice steps and movements thousands of times before slowly learning the techniques of kicking and punching.  Muay Chaiya has both cultural and fitness value, and genuine instructors are rare here in Thailand.

Muay Chaiya Methodology

Unlike Muay Thai, students do not start by learning to kick or punch. Instructors teach the steps and movements.  Students practice them thousands of times before slowly learning techniques in kicking and punching.  Learn Muay Thai Chaiya for its cultural and fitness value.  As Muay Chaiya instructors are rare in Thailand, take advantage of this class to discover the roots of Thailand’s national sport.  Develop basic, strong, impressive self defense skills for real situations while keeping the body fit through exercises to work the core.
