After two months of intensive training, 10 of the 25 FINA scholarship swimmers residing at Thanyapura will travel to Kazan, Russia to compete at the FINA World Championships.
Aquatics head coach Miguel Lopez Alvarado said: “We are hoping to come back to Thanyapura with at least eight National Records and one Olympic qualifying time. I am very excited for Kazan and this is a good test of how the FINA programme is going.”
The swimmers qualified for Kazan are:

- Cheran de Silva (FINA/SRI)
- Sjagor Mohammed Mahifizur (BAN)
- Shivani (IND)
- Sjanan Shingh (IND)
- Shirish Gurung (NEP)
- Sofia Gadegaard Shah (NEP)
- Eloi Imaniraguha (RWA)
- Sajina Aishath (MAL)
- Shajan Aminath (MAL)
The first event starts on the 2nd of August and will last until the 9th of August. The swimmers will compete across multiple distances and strokes: the 50-meter, 200-meter, and 1500-meter freestyle, 100-meter breast stroke and 50-meter and 200-meter butterfly.
Sofia Shah of Nepal will be racing in the 50-meter and 200-meter freestyle. She says, “I think I am going to be setting a few national records in Kazan. I have been swimming some of my best times here. I don’t know what my limits are now.”
